Macks Creek School is Preparing for a Safe & Exciting New School Year

The Macks Creek R-V School District is excited to welcome students back to campus when we begin school on August 24th. Our goal is to host our students in as traditional a setting as possible utilizing various proven common sense strategies to ensure everyone’s safety this school year.  We recognize the best place for teaching and learning to occur is right here on our campus and believe with everyone’s cooperation we can safely meet every student’s needs.

We plan to adhere to the 2020-2021 calendar adopted by the school board in February. We are  planning to run bus routes and serve free breakfast and lunch to all students again this school year. We also plan to offer a full athletic calendar for our students with new sports: Fall baseball (in addition to Spring baseball) and Spring softball (in addition to Fall softball) for high school athletes. We will also offer middle school cross country. Every single Macks Creek School student can also expect to have his/her very own Chromebook to utilize this year.

Students and parents should expect a variety of procedural changes this school year to protect everyone from COVID-19.  For example, a series of “Meet the Teacher” events will be held August 17 through 21 instead of a single large-group open house. The district will share more specific details closer to the start of school.  Once the year begins, students can expect daily temperature checks when they enter campus and will be encouraged to wear masks when they are riding the school bus. Students will also be assigned seats on each bus and family groups will be asked to sit together.  At this juncture, students will not be required to wear masks during the school day, but may do so if they prefer. Parents who have the ability to transport their children to and from school are also encouraged to do so to reduce the amount of students riding each bus route.  We are revising our attendance policies for next school year and strongly encourage anyone who is not feeling well to stay home. Any student running a temperature will be quarantined until their parents arrive to pick them up.

The district is also taking steps to break students into small groups that will not have contact with other groups during the school day.  For example, each of our self-contained elementary classrooms (which already enjoy a low student to teacher ratio) will not eat lunch or attend recess with other elementary classrooms. In some instances students will be served breakfast and lunch within their classrooms and/or access the cafeteria and playground according to a staggered schedule.  Our middle school and high school students can expect differing bell schedules during the school day to reduce the number of students in the halls during passing time. The district will also be taking steps to space students out within their individual classrooms.  Lastly, we do recognize individual students, classes, an entire grade level or building may need to stay home for a period of time if an outbreak does occur.

By grouping students into smaller groups (who do not have contact with each other), we hope to minimize the likelihood of community spread, reducing the need to dismiss school for everyone. If this occurs, we will cooperate with the Camden County Health department to determine how long students and teachers may need to stay home with the goal of safely bringing all those who are well back to school as soon as possible. In the interim, students will be able to utilize their individual Chromebooks to keep up with their peers who are here at school while they are away.  Our teachers are all receiving training this summer to become proficient in the use of Google Classroom to enhance instruction here at school and to more effectively utilize it if a student or group of students must be at home for a quarantine period.

Spectators attending sporting events will be asked to adhere to local and state health guidelines and to maintain social distancing.  Spectators for outdoor events are also asked to bring their own chairs and refrain from using bleachers if at all possible. We will provide more specific details for sporting events later in August.
