The Macks Creek baseball team beat Stover 12-2 to win its home opener and secure its second-straight win on Tuesday, April 1, held at the Macks Creek Baseball Field.
The Pirates (2-2) cruised over the Bulldogs (0-5) and on Monday, Macks Creek beat the Hornets (1-4) from Fair Play 15-4 on the road.
“The thing that has impressed me the most so far are my freshman leaders,” said Pirates coach Fisher Snelling. “We are a very young team, and multiple leaders have really stepped up to keep the team on track when things go off the rails.”
Loaded with a young roster, Snelling has this team focused on confidence.
"The most important thing for them to continue to improve on is their mental approach to the game,” Snelling said. "Since they are so young, many have not yet realized that the mental game is just as important as the physical one. Their approach at the plate, as well as their confidence going into every play will be a big help for them to keep improving at a rapid pace as the season moves along.”
According to Snelling, the Pirates are healthy, but the squad will be relying more on their underclassmen after an injury.
“As a team we are very healthy but last game, our senior centerfielder broke his finger, potentially ending his season,” he said. “This will be a tough blow, but we have multiple players ready to step up and fill the spot if needed.”
Snelling gave all the credit for the recent surge at the plate to this young Pirates squad and their desire to bring a winning season to Macks Creek.
“As for restoring the optimism, 100 percent of the credit goes to the boys. Every one of them wants this team to be something for the school, as well as the entire community to be proud of,” Snelling said. “We all want to be good and do everything that we can to make every play something that we can be proud of. Without them I am just some crazy guy yelling from the coaches box, they make it happen.”
