Macks Creek elementary students traded their usual classroom lessons for a day packed with real-world safety education during Ag Safety Day, hosted in a joint effort by the Macks Creek FFA and Climax Springs FFA chapters.
FFA members from Macks Creek not only helped supervise students but also took an active role in presenting various safety materials. Their leadership and enthusiasm set the tone for a day of learning and hands-on engagement. Throughout the day, students rotated through multiple safety-focused stations, each offering valuable lessons in both agricultural and everyday safety.
A highlight included a visit from Southwest Electric Cooperative, where students learned the dangers of power lines and the important work that linemen do to keep electricity flowing safely in the community.
Local firefighters and ambulance personnel also gave students an up-close look at their equipment and explained their roles in emergencies. They shared how to properly contact emergency services and emphasized the importance of staying calm during crises.
Another impactful station focused on disability awareness, helping students develop empathy, understanding, and respect for people living with disabilities. In the tool safety area, students were taught how to safely handle basic tools and learned about the precautions necessary to prevent injuries.
Students also had the chance to explore large farming equipment, such as tractors and skid steers, while learning about PTO (power take-off) safety, proper equipment handling, and the importance of using hearing protection around loud machinery.
A bus safety station provided practical guidance on how to stay safe while riding and exiting a school bus, while the animal handling and care station gave students a hands-on opportunity to learn about proper animal treatment and basic care practices.
Ag Safety Day is an incredible opportunity to teach young students lessons that could one day save a life. It’s about more than agriculture, it’s about responsibility, awareness, and being prepared.
The event was made possible thanks to the generous time and support of volunteers. A special thanks was given to the Camden County Farm Bureau for providing lunch for all the students and volunteers.
As the day came to a close, students left not only with smiles but with a wealth of knowledge on how to be safer and more responsible members of their community. With the continued support of local organizations and schools, Ag Safety Day remains a valuable tradition in shaping the next generation of safe, informed citizens.
