Children, families, long-time residents, and artists are coming together to create A Portrait of Macks Creek, a five-panel community mural celebrating the history, people, and future of Macks Creek.
Led by professional artists Michele and Richard Fritz of Art Experience Studio, the project began with a community Listening Day and continued through visits with seniors, families, businesses, and longtime residents. Stories about early homesteads, schools, churches, gas stations, general stores, Whistle Bridge, local businesses, and life along Macks Creek are being transformed into permanent artwork for the Macks Creek Library.
The creek serves as a visual thread throughout the mural, connecting the community’s past with the present and future. Later panels will feature memories shared by residents as well as children imagining their own future in Macks Creek.
Community members are invited to help paint during two upcoming free sessions:
Wednesday, Aug. 12 — 1 to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 15 — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
No painting experience is required to participate. Children and their parents are highly encouraged to join the painting sessions.
Following the painting sessions, a partial reveal and community celebration will be held on Tuesday, August 18 — 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Macks Creek Library.
A Portrait of Macks Creek — Celebrating our stories and imagining the future together is presented through the Camden County Library District–Macks Creek Branch with public support from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
