Macks Creek Senior Softball player, Brooke Downing celebrated an extremely rare milestone achieved by only a tiny fraction of pitchers. During this evening’s game against Richland (the Lady Pirates won 10 - 5), she threw the pitch to strike out her 500th batter! Her journey to accomplish this began many years ago. Please enjoy the exchange below between Brooke and her High School Principal, Mr. Jason Trusty as she reflects upon this achievement.
Mr. Trusty: "Congratulations on reaching 500 career high school strikeouts, Brooke! That is an incredible milestone. How does it feel to achieve this?"
Brooke: "Thank you! Reaching 500 career strikeouts is a moment that makes me stop and really think about how far I have come. To me, 500 strikeouts is more than just a number. Every single one represents hours of practice, early mornings, lessons from my coaches, tough games, mistakes, adjustments, pressure, and all the times I chose not to give up on myself. When I first started playing softball, I never could have imagined that one day I would reach a milestone like this. I am incredibly proud of it, not just because of the number, but because of everything that went into earning it."
Mr. Trusty: "You've mentioned how much you have grown throughout your four years of playing varsity softball. Looking back at your freshman year compared to now as a senior, how have you changed as a player and leader?"
Brooke: "When I think back to my freshman year of high school, it is honestly crazy to see how much I have changed. I was not always the easiest person to coach when it came to bad calls, and I did not have the leadership skills or mental toughness that I have today. I let certain moments get to me, and I did not always know how to handle the pressure that came with being a leader. But over the years, softball has changed that part of me. I have grown mentally, emotionally, and as a leader. I have learned that one bad call does not decide a game, one bad inning does not define me, and one mistake does not take away all the hard work I have put in. I am genuinely proud of the mental game I have developed and the leader I have become."
Mr. Trusty: "Not only are you dominant in the circle, but you've also contributed heavily at the plate with 10 career home runs. How does it feel to make such a well-rounded impact for your team?"
Brooke: "This season has made everything even more special. I have continued to grow as a pitcher, compete alongside my teammates, and learn something new every time I step onto the field. I have also been able to contribute at the plate, and as of right now, I have 10 career home runs. That is another accomplishment I never would have imagined when I was the little girl first learning how to play. Being able to help my team both in the circle and at the plate means so much to me. Some of my favorite memories are the moments when I know I was able to make a difference for my teammates."
Mr. Trusty: "Your parents have been such a massive support system, driving you everywhere and never missing a game. How much does their support mean to you?"
Brooke: "They have been there for me from the very beginning and have never missed a game. No matter how far away the tournament was, how early we had to wake up, how late we got home, or how tired everyone was, they were always there. They have spent countless hours driving me to practices, tournaments, lessons, and games, sitting in the stands, cheering me on, and supporting me through every high and low. Knowing that they are always there, win or lose, has given me a kind of confidence that I cannot explain. Reaching 500 career strikeouts means so much to me, but a part of that accomplishment belongs to them too. They were there for the practices that nobody saw, the long drives, the tough games, and all the moments in between. I know that one day when my playing career is over, I will probably remember the numbers and the accomplishments, but I think I will remember my parents sitting in those stands even more."
Mr. Trusty: "You have a few special coaches and supporters who have coached and mentored you along the way—like Louis Kirby, Patrick Wolf, Becky Salter, Micah Spence, and Hanna Norman. How have they impacted your career?"
Brooke: "When I was five years old, I knocked on Coach Kirby’s door and asked him to teach me how to play softball. I had no idea that one little moment would turn into years of lessons, memories, arguments, hard work, and growth. Coach Kirby is one of the biggest reasons I am who I am today. He has pushed me to be the best player I can possibly be, even during the times when I wanted to give up.
I am also incredibly thankful for Coach Wolf, who has not only taught me so much about the game of softball but has been there for me through so much of my journey. Boy, do we argue, but I truly could not have done it without him. He has pushed me, challenged me, and helped me become a better player and person.
Coach Salter has also played an important role in my journey. She has watched me grow since my freshman year and helped change the way I look at the mental side of the game. She has helped me understand that softball is not only physical. Your mindset can completely change the way you play, and learning how to control my emotions and trust myself has been one of the biggest parts of my growth.
And then there is Coach Spence, who stepped in during my senior year and has already made this season so incredible. Even though it has only been one season, the impact and memories made this year will always mean so much to me. I can’t forget Coach Norman who would buy me a sonic drink for every homerun I hit and was proud of me always. I am thankful for everyone who has stepped onto this journey with me."
Mr. Trusty: "Finally, what are your future goals after high school, and how do you plan to stay connected to softball?"
Brooke : "After high school, I plan to continue my softball career for another two years of travel ball. Eventually, I hope to become an athletic director and a head softball coach, hopefully right here in Macks Creek. I want to be able to give back to the sport that has given me so much. I want to help young girls fall in love with softball the same way I did. I want to be someone who encourages them when they are struggling, pushes them when they want to give up, and reminds them that one bad game or one mistake does not define them. I want to take everything my coaches have taught me and pass it on to the next generation."
